Local activists, scholars differ on pontiff’s remarks

A number of local activists and scholars hailed yesterday what they saw as a
significant shift in the Vatican’s thinking about the role condoms could
play in disease prevention, following Pope Benedict XVI’s remarks in a new
book that said condom use to prevent HIV transmission could be seen as a
“first step’’ toward more moral sexual behavior.
